The Indoor Rowing Machine. The Fan. And The Feeling Of The Open Water.

March 19th, 2010

After rowing crew in college for three years plus, I literally fell in love with the sport. So naturally getting a home rowing machine years later was a no brainer.

We would wake at 5am and then run down to the lake in Worcester, MA and then, just as the sun was starting to come up and as the mist was coming off Lake Q, we would slip our crew shell into the water for the next two hours of hell.

Fast forward to years later, and many more pounds later. LOL.

I bought my indoor home rowing machine because I was living in NYC and still wanted and needed the best workout. I needed the burn that a great rowing workout gives.

When I first started rowing, I really had no idea how intense a workout it was for the legs…like most people I thought it was an upper body issue.

Wrong.

And rowing on an indoor rowing machine will tell you that the second you step off of it. It’s all about the legs on your home rower. Big time leg work is what you need to expect.

You are pushing back with your legs as your slide takes you to the rear of your position and you arms simply follow. In fact, when I first started rowing in college, I was repeatedly told by my rowing coach that I was too focused on my arms.

My compact indoor rowing machine and I have become the best of friends.

Some weekends I will even get the big fan out there and will keep the huge water bottle next to me…this way I can douse myself while working out on the rowing machine and if I close my eyes, I can imagine myself out there in Worcester all over again.
